American Racer

The photos below were taken by me and show the AMERICAN RACER laid-up at Suisun Bay, Calif., on March 27, 2010. Built in 1964, the AMERICAN RACER was the first container ship to cross the North Atlantic (in March 1968). In 1969, she was also involved in Operation Frequent Wind in Vietnam. The ship continued to serve as civilian cargo ship until transfered to MARAD in 1983 joining the Ready Reserve Force at Suisun Bay. Leaving the RRF in 2001, the ship remained at Suisun Bay. On December 2, 2010, the AMERICAN RACER was towed from Suisun Bay to ESCO Marine of Brownsville, Tx., for scrapping.
